Pink Floyd Part 1

Pink Floyd is a British psychedelic rock band from the 70's and 80's known for their worldwide success and longevity of their music.

The earliest predecessor to Pink Floyd was a band that had many different names, most commonly The Abdabs or The Screaming Abdabs. This band was formed in 1964 by Roger Waters. The band lineup was: Roger Waters(lead guitar), Nick Mason(drums), Rick Wright(rhythm guitar and keyboards), Clive Metcalfe(bass), Keith Noble and Juliette Gale(vocals). Roger Waters knew Mason and Wright from school and also attended school with Syd Barrett and David Gilmour. Metcalfe and Noble left the group before the year ended. To replace them Bob Klose(lead guitar) and Chris Dennis(vocals) joined. Roger Waters switched to bass guitar and Rick Wright discontinued playing rhythm guitar, focusing on keyboards and organs. Gale left the band after she married Wright. Bob Klose was a classmate of Syd Barrett and David Gilmour at Cambridge University and shortly after Chris Dennis joined Klose brought in Barrett to replace him. Barrett and Klose would share vocal and guitar duties. Barrett, Klose, Waters, Mason, and Wright first called themselves Tea Set. Barrett then came up with the name The Pink Floyd Sound which came from the name of two blues musicians from the southern United States: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council(some sources say that Barrett came up with the name The Pink Floyd Sound on spot when they were playing at a show the same night as another band that had the same name). Sound was dropped from the band’s name and later The was dropped as well. Bob Klose left the group in 1965 because he wanted to play jazz and blues while Barrett was more interested in psychedelic rock and pop. When Klose left Barret became the lead guitar and lead vocalist and began composing his own songs. Barrett and the others quickly started experimenting. Their songs were stretched out with instrumental passages incorporating feedback, electronic screeches and strange, haunting sounds. They incorporated light shows into their performances to increase the psychedelic effect. Pink Floyd became a favourite of the underground culture playing at numerous now famous underground venues. The band formed Blackhill Enterprises, a rock music management company, in a six-way partnership along with their managers Peter Jenner and Andrew King. Blackhill Enterprises would go on to manage many acts including The Clash and later on Syd Barrett as a solo artist. In early 1967 Pink Floyd earned a contract with EMI and their first single, "Arnold Layne", made the Top 20. The follow up song, "See Emily Play", reached the Top 10. They also released their debut album in 1967, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. This cd showcased the bands fascination with space travel. Towards the end of 67' Syd Barrett would take a darker turn. He had always been driven by his eccentric ways and quite frequent experiences with LSD but this was something different. The burden of fame and his acid-dependant mind was too much for him, he withdrew into a debilitating madness.

so not much so far, pretty rough, a lot of the early information is hard to come by
so tonight I was looking at my bulletin board and noticed my Pink Floyd speech from grade 8, thinking of the mistakes I keep noticing and how incomplete it is, wondering how I actually did well on it and was offered to present it in front of the school(of course I said no)....so I decided I was going to rewrite it so that it's much more accurate and complete.................so I guess I'm gonna post parts of it cause I just love Pink Floyd so much......so hope someone enjoys this besides me

sometimes I actually like what I write

I'm reaching out, I'm reaching in
I feel it move across my skin
It stops and tears and burns the flesh
then starts to look for somewhere fresh
as I feel the pain it starts to drain
and leaves a stain upon my chest
I fight it off the best I can
but my best is not enough
the battlefield is much too rough
and the situation much too tough
it called my bluff and now I'm fucked
and as my eyes start to close
between my arms I tuck my head
what's about to come I do not dread

...

I'm reaching up, I'm reaching out
hoping that I'll clear one doubt
I look about and no ones near
but I can tell that it's still here
it makes it clear my time is now
so I break free and start to flee
it chases after, screams with glee
it urges more to capture me
it closes in and I can't see
yet I feint back and fourth
and so close by I feel its taint
fatigue sets in
I come to terms that I can't win
I turn around to meet this sin

...to be continued
